The gasket is made of paper, rubber sheet or copper sheet. It is a material that is placed between two planes to strengthen the sealing. The sealing element is arranged between the static sealing surfaces to prevent fluid leakage.

A gasket is a mechanical seal between two objects, and is usually used to prevent pressure, corrosion, and natural expansion and contraction of the pipeline from leakage between the two objects. Since the machined surface cannot be perfect, the irregularities can be filled with gaskets. Gaskets are usually made of sheet materials, such as paper backing, rubber, silicone rubber, metal, cork, felt, neoprene, nitrile rubber, glass fiber or plastic polymers (such as polytetrafluoroethylene). Gaskets for certain applications may contain asbestos.
